Dr Alex C. Y. Wong is CEO and Co-Founder of RedBite Solutions, the University of Cambridge spin-out that builds itemit. He holds a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge.

RedBite was co-founded in 2006 out of the Cambridge Auto-ID Lab by Prof Duncan McFarlane, Alan Thorne, Charlotte Ellarby and Alex. The three academic co-founders were among the original architects of the EPC Network, the identification and lookup layer that made item-level RFID practical rather than theoretical.

That work is the reason itemit treats an asset as an identity first and a database row second. Every asset gets a resolvable identifier, and the tag technology sitting on top of it, whether that is a QR code, a barcode, an RFID tag or a GPS unit, is a detail that can change without the asset losing its history.

Alex writes here about the parts of asset management that teams usually discover the hard way: choosing a tagging technology that matches the environment rather than the brochure, keeping a fixed asset register that survives an audit, and the operational gap between knowing what you own and knowing where it is right now.

Writes about: RFID, EPC Network, Asset tracking, Asset identity and resolution, IT asset management, Fixed asset registers.
